Root Insurance
Drop the Score
NAIC Dumpsters

For decades, car insurance companies have been basing their rates using inherently discriminatory factors. In 2020, Root Insurance published a report that details how “credit scoring” (using credit score as a determining factor for car insurance pricing) causes disproportionate harm to historically under-resourced communities. Populations that over index in immigrants, people of color, those struggling to pay large medical expenses, and families who have suffered economic crises. With the “Drop the Score” initiative, Root has committed to make car insurance more fair by removing credit scores from their premium price calculation— becoming the first car insurance company to do so.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a standard-setting and regulatory organization who has the power to abolish discriminatory policies, held their summer meeting in Root Insurance’s hometown, Columbus, Ohio.

Since it’s the NAIC’s self-proclaimed mission to “protect the public interest”, Root wanted to make sure their opinion of unfair pricing factors were known.

We couldn’t reach them with traditional conference media placements where the NAIC has the right to control the messaging, so we had to find a creative way to deliver an impactful statement to the commissioners in attendance.

The convention area in Columbus has almost no out-of-home media to buy so we had to create our own media space.
